North Oxford Victorian Suburb Conservation Area is a substantial residential area lying to the north of the historic core of Oxford. The interest of the area lies in its containment and consistency. The land ownership from the 16th century into the 20th century, and the topography, enabled the area to be laid out as a planned suburb. A small number of architects were responsible for most of the buildings in the area, and the shared aesthetic of an almost rural ethos has created distinctive qualities to the area, characterised by large gardens, wide streets and abundant trees.
A conservation area appraisal defines the special interest and character of the particular conservation area. This appraisal has been prepared on behalf of Oxford City Council with local residents and institutions between late Summer and Winter 2016. The draft appraisal was approved for consultation by the City Executive Board on 9th February 2017, and the Council is now seeking the views of residents and interested groups on the document.
We would like to hear the views of the community on the content and findings of this appraisal. An important part of the appraisal process is finding out how people value the area. We want to find out what you cherish, feel is significant, dislike, or just put up with and what aspirations you have for the area. This will help inform how the area should be managed in the future.
A public consultation will run until Friday 28th April 2017. Responses from the consultation will be analysed and incorporated into the final appraisal, which will then be reported to the relevant committee following the completion of any necessary amendments.
